DIY blue roses. March 13, 2007

When Angel texted saying she wanted blue and white roses in a bouquet, I was quite excited. They don’t sell them at the wholesalers, yuo’ve gotta get white ones and make them blue yourself. Here’s my first ever blue rose arrangement!
This arrangement costs $28.00.
It was for a guy, so decided to keep the ribbon detail simple, with just a gold band.
I prefer the roses with the light blue tinge. But, I’ve got 2 roses still left in the solution. Am going to wait a couple of days more to see how dark they can get.
Till then, smelling the roses.

Since psychology is a staple part of my diet, I thought I’d do a bit of research into flowers to see if there are known benefits, psychological or otherwise, to having flowers around you. Apparently, flowers and plants are closely linked to human well-being.
As early as 1789, medical personnel noted that “impoverished patients who had to work to pay for their care seemed to recover more quickly when they worked in a hospital’s kitchen garden as opposed to working in cattle sheds or other surroundings.”
And of the more famous studies showed that “patients recovering from gall bladder surgery who viewed plants from their hospital windows had shorter hospital stays, took fewer potent analgesics for pain and received fewer negative nursing comments than their counterparts who viewed a building from their windows.”
The aroma from flowers is said to change one’s mood as well. Lavender puts a person in a more relaxed mood, and roses are said to make some happy. Personally, I like how blooming lilies envelop a room, they trigger good memories for me.
Colour therapy’s quite the in thing now, and some florist even suggest colours that you should get to suit the mood.
Red: Raises your body temperature and blood pressure, Increases your appetite. Gives you vigor.
Pink: Makes you younger and happy.
Orange: Increases your appetite. Refreshes you mentally.
Yellow: Cheers you up. Makes you ambitious.
Green: Relieves tired eyes. Sedation.
Blue: Decreases blood pressure and heart beat. Controls the appetite if you are on a diet. Helps you go to sleep.
Purple: Sadation. Helps natural recovery.
White: Makes your mind stable.
Now, as if you needed reasons to get flowers.*grins*
Till then,smelling the roses.

mum’s arrangement. March 1, 2007

There are always fresh flowers in my house every week, and in the time that I had not been to the wholesalers, Mum dearest popped by. She doesn’t really spend time agonising, like I do, over what flowers to buy and how they are to be arranged. She just picks ones that catch her eye, and are inexpensive, and puts them together.
Anything I’ve learnt about arrangements, like the different levels or groups of colours, doesn’t really matter to Mum. But they always turn out nice, and this one made me especially happy cuz’ of its bright colours. It was quite a nice surprise when I saw them a few days back. They still look the same today, the carnations have not withered the slightest bit. Maybe I should look into them next.
Till then, smelling the roses.
